What is Sled Dog Racing in Australia?

October 26, 2017

What is Sled Dog Racing?

Sled Dog Racing (sometimes called Dog Sled Racing) originated from the Inuits and other native cultures which lived in areas where it snowed in winter. Sled dogs were their mode of transport over any distance. This mode of transport eventuated into a competitive sport which now occurs throughout most of the continents. Sled Dog Racing is where either one dog or a team pulls either a sled or a rig or scooter (for areas with no snow).

What is a Musher?

The musher is the person who controls the team and stands on the back of the sled or rig or on the scooter.  The musher uses voice commands to control the team giving them instructions on which direction to turn, how fast to run, stop and start.

Where in Australia can I see Sled Dog Racing?

There are races in New South Wales, Victoria, Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania.  Races are normally held at State Forest trails.

When can I see Sled Dog Racing?

Unfortunately, Sled Dog Racing is not all year around this is due to the temperature restrictions in race rules and for the health benefit of the dogs. The racing season starts in May and finishes in September.

Do I need a husky or malamute to compete in Sled Dog Racing?

No. Any dog that shows the desire to pull and run can do Sled Dog Racing. Harness up your dog a couple of times and you might be surprised what it can do.

Can anyone become a Musher?

Anyone can become a musher no matter how old or young you are.

What equipment do I need?

Your dog needs to wear a specific harness which attaches to a gangline. The gangline is simply a piece of bungie rope which attaches the dog to the scooter, rig or canicross belt. A scooter is used for 1 or 2 dog teams and a rig is used for teams with 3 up to 8 dogs.  Canicross is for 1 dog.  You will also need a helmet, a safety kit which contains safety scissors. If the race is at night then you must also have a head lamp.

Who can I talk to to compete in Sled Dog Racing?

Join your local club to start competing in Sled Dog Racing.  NEGRC Queensland is a Sled Dog Club with events in Toowoomba, Esk, Brisbane and Tenterfield NSW.  Email info@negrc.org.au or check out our events page for more details.
