Once starting nursing Michelle achieved her goal of caring for the sickest patients in the hospital working in Intensive Care Units in England and Townsville. After achieving a Masters in Intensive Care Nursing and a Graduate Certificate in Paediatric Nursing (Intensive Care) Michelle challenged herself further by obtaining a position at NETS (NSW Neonatal and Paediatric Emergency Transport Service) caring for newborns and paediatric patients in a moving intensive care unit- in the back of ambulances, planes and helicopters throughout New South Wales and internationally.

Michelle and her partner Damian are failed foster parents to two Malamutes: Mojo and Kirra. After going to the animal rescue centre to look for a cat they returned with two massive dogs. Michelle grew up with British Bulldogs and is still trying to come to terms with the amount of hair a malamute can lose without going bald. Dog sledding gives Michelle joy by seeing how excited the dogs are to run and how happy they are after running as far and as fast as they can and a weekend away camping.

If you need Michelle’s assistance during the race, she will be located near the start and finish chute areas monitoring teams during racing. Unfortunately, there were no Siberian Huskies in Australia back then, so I had to make do with the family GSP – I made her a leather harness out of an old horse bridle and we had a lot of fun. By 1988, Siberians had made it to Australia, I got my first one and never looked back. By the end of 1989 I had three or four, and a lifelong commitment to the working Siberian had begun. I bred my first two litters under the Kishiga prefix, and then became Norstarr Siberians. For a few years my focus was dual purpose Siberians, I worked and raced all of my dogs, and also showed – in a few short years I had bred 12 Australian Show Champions - all of them working and race winning dogs. When the American show Siberian type made it to Australia, I knew that that was not a direction I wished my kennel to go in and began to concentrate my time solely on working and racing my dogs. I’m proud of the consistent success my dogs have achieved over the last three decades on the race circuit, as well as bringing myself and my family a lot of joy and a real sense of purpose.

I was lucky enough to be a part of the sport of sleddog racing here in Australia from its’ infancy. The Siberian Husky Club of Victoria was the first to hold races, I held positions on the Committee and Sledding Sub Committee for some years. It was nice to see the club hold its 30th Anniversary Race in 2017!! It was an exciting time as Open Race Clubs formed and began to hold races, and within a few short years there was a number of races in SA, NSW, VIC, ACT and QLD – and the Australian scene has never looked back. I was involved in the formation of one such club, Southern Cross Sled Dog Club, holding various committee positions including Vice President and Race Marshall. The Club held one of the most hotly contested races on the circuit for over ten years and I made some lifelong friends. I was also part of the committee of the first umbrella organisation The Victorian Sled Dog Racing Association, which was responsible for writing and organising many of the policies, rules and guidelines that are still in use today. The race scene in the Nineties was a vibrant one, lots of enthusiasm and growth, big entries and great competition. There were quite a few international visitors who came to share their knowledge and experiences – Dee Dee Jonrowe (USA), Tim White (USA), Leigh and Susan Gilchrist (Lokiboden Siberians CAN), Terry Hinesly (USA) and Ali Koops (UK). Tim White took our Australian dryland sledding invention – the scooter – back to the mushing world, something us Aussies should be proud of.

In 2012, I was able to see a 15+ year dream become reality and welcomed Jedda the GSP x EP to our kennel. I had been a big fan of the Open North American and Fur Rondy Open sprint races in Alaska since the late 90’s, and from the moment Egil Ellis came over from Sweden with his Eurohounds and won the ONAC in 1999 I began following his kennel; and knew that one day I wanted to have dogs like that. Now in 2018, we now have a kennel which is half Siberians and half Eurohounds. As a musher I always want to keep learning, and for me running a new type of dog after so many years has been the way to do that.

Another way to keep learning was to take off on an adventure. In Jan 2016 I was very fortunate to stay at Mitch Seavey’s Iditarod kennel in Alaska. It was a couple of months I will never forget. I was responsible for the yearling group in the kennel, around 40 or so. This involved their daily care, feeding etc, as well as training them to be sled dogs. Running teams every day in beautiful Alaska was a dream come true. We did runs every day, some of them 40 miles with a break in the middle to teach the yearlings how to camp in preparation for their long-distance racing careers. It was amazing to see just what these dogs are capable of, and how much joy there is living and working with them every day. By the time I left the whole group were proper sled dogs, including three yearling leaders I had developed in that time. I was so proud following them in Iditarod this year! I was also teamed up with Mitch’s main handler for the daily ‘vet care’ routine of his A-Team, which included daily massages, laser treatments and foot care. That was a huge learning curve being able to get my hands on so many dogs every day and fast track my knowledge of injury treatments and prevention. All of us who were there at the kennel that season were incredibly proud of the dogs and Mitch for his record-breaking win in Iditarod that year, the perfect end to an amazing winter for me. The week before I left I attended the Fur Rondy World Championship Open Sprint race and handled a friend’s team, and then handling for Seavey teams at Iditarod Ceremonial Start before heading home.

I’m very happy to be able to attend as Race Marshall for NEGRC Queensland this year.

I competed at this race back in 1999 when Bec was just 3 years old. She still remembers the ferry ride in the dog truck to get to the race site 😊I attended again in 2016 to compete in the ASSA National Championships and it was great to see such an enthusiastic and professionally run event; and I’m sure this year will be the same.

Thank you to the club for inviting me and I look forward to catching up with you all.

Annie Jackson

ASSA Vice President

Meet the 2018 Blackhawk NEGRC Queensland Northern Challenge Official Photographer

Introducing Cate Macnamara...People often ask how I got into Dogsled racing seeing as I don't race.It started with Dragonboat racing. Open knife blades or pointy ended cutters are not permitted.Snubline - a lead or line with a clip that allows you to tie up your dog, rig or scooter safely (generally to a tree or similar) so that you can fix any tangles or issues you may be having. This can include a quick release system for ease of getting back onto the trail once the issue is resolved (generally required for bigger teams).

**NEGRC Queensland New Members receive the cutters and bumbag safety kit as part of their new membership. You should receive this from one of the committee on your first training run with your dog. You will need to provide the snubline - a dog lead is appropriate for this purpose**

2. No slip collars are recommended.

5. HARNESS

Harnesses are specifically designed for dogs to wear that are conducive to pulling and running. Our members and committee will be more than happy to lend you a harness for your dog for your first couple of runs. This will also help you find the right harness for your dog both in sizing and in style***

The following list of equipment is also essential but with different requirements depending on the class you wish to enter. If you are confused by what is required of your class, please see one of the NEGRC Queensland Committee Members or our Visitor Liaison (Maranda Wegrzyniak) and Musher Delegate (Steve Shale).

1. Located 44km east of Tenterfield (heading towards Casino) on the Bruxner Highway; or only 8km west of the town of Drake (heading from Casino). From Queensland: There are three possible routes from South East Queensland to get there; The Pacific Highway via Lismore/Casino, the Mount Lindsey Highway via Beaudesert (most direct but windy back roads), or the New England Highway via Warwick/Stanthorpe/Tenterfield (easiest route towing a trailer). All routes are approximately 4 - 5 hours drive from Brisbane. From Interstate: The two main highways heading north from the southern states are the Pacific Highway and the New England Highway. If you are coming up the Pacific head towards the towns of Casino or Lismore, and then take the Bruxner Highway westbound towards the town of Drake. If you come up via the New England Highway, head to Tenterfield and then turn east on the Bruxner Highway for approx 44km. The entrance to the forest can be a bit difficult to find but we will have plenty of signs out either side of the entrance road and in the forest to help you find the campsite.

VENUE FACILITIES: This large fantastic shady campsite is located in the middle of the forest. Other family members are welcome to observe.

Combined Kennels – You may combine kennels. This however is not about running large teams unless you feel you can deal with your issues in this manner. Ideally run smaller teams so that problems can be dealt with.

Overview

This training event is aimed at allowing you to deal with your problem areas and also provide an insight into other aspects of sled dog sports that can assist you in training and developing your team. We will put you in situations to expose your problem areas, we will not let you stay within your comfort zone or avoid problems. This is the only way you will be able to take your skills forward. Please bring your problem dogs and run them, know your dogs, their quirks and anticipate them. We are there to assist throughout and will step in as needed. Do not be concerned about things not working out or being out of your comfort zone, it’s a key part of the learning process. We have been through this ourselves before and this is the only way you will be able to build your team and the benefits will open up the sport for you.

Registration

To book and register for this Bootcamp go tohttps://www.negrc.org.au/events/mushers-bootcamp

What is Sled Dog Racing?

The History of Dog Sledding Dog sledding started out from the Inuits and other native cultures who lived in areas where it snowed during winter months and was a means of travel. The people of the North were dependent on these animals for protection, companionship, hunting, trapping and most of all – transportation. Sled dogs enabled explorers such as Byrd, Peary and Amundsen to travel the frozen wastelands of both Poles and have played a vital role in bringing civilisation to the snowbound areas of the world.

In January 1925 a case of diphtheria was discovered in Nome, Alaska but the supply of antitoxin in that city was inadequate to stave off an epidemic. A relay of 22 native and mail teams and their drivers forged through the rough interior of Alaska and across the Bering Sea ice to bring the serum from Anchorage to the grateful townspeople. A statue of Balto, who led one of the relay teams, stands in New York’s Central Park to commemorate this historical Nome Serum Run event. The Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race was started in the 1970’s by Joe Redington Senior and other keen team drivers. This event is being held during March of each year in the memory of this Serum Run and it covers 1,049 miles across some of the worst terrain in the world. Every year this race attracts more and more worldwide interest as does the sport of sled dog racing as a whole.

Iditarod Trail Race - Start Line (March 2016)

What is Sled Dog Racing?

In today’s world, sled dog racing is a recreational sport where either one dog or a team pulls a sled (snow), or a rig or scooter on dry land. The person controlling the team is known as the musher. Sled dog racing is done from snow to dry-land and is practiced in various climates all around the world.

Sled Dog Racing started in Australia over 25 years ago and has become a very popular sport where dogs and their musher must work together making their way around the forest on dirt trails.

For the 1 and 2 dog class mushers use scooters, for the 3, 4, 6 and 8 class mushers use 3 or 4 wheeled rigs. The dogs are highly trained, skilled athletes who learn specific commands in order to take left and right turns and make their way safely around the track.

Teams navigate the tracks following coloured markers:

red on the right - turn right

red on the left - turn left

blue to confirm a correct turn and yellow for hazards. At the markers and based upon track circumstances, mushers will call commands to their dogs such as: "gee" turn right; "haw" turn left; "easy" to slow; "trail" to other mushers before passing or "on by" to make a safe pass.

The distance raced depends on the number of dogs in the team. For example, six dogs will race between 7 and 15 kilometres. The more the dogs in a team, the further and faster they can travel. A six-dog team is capable of speeds up to over 40 kilometers per hour! The speed a dog team can maintain is very dependent on the weather conditions, with it ideally being low temperature and low humidity. Teams depart from a start chute at timed intervals, typically 30 seconds apart and are individually timed for the distance using a time trial format or heats. These times are then compared to determine the winner of the race after all heats. Two new disciplines were recently added: Bikejoring, a recreation sport where a harnessed dog is attached to a towline to pull and run ahead of a cyclist and CaniCross for the mushers that like to run!

CaniCross (CaniX) is the sport of cross-country running with dogs. It started in Europe and is also very popular in UK. All you need is a dog, a canicross belt, a bungee line and a harness. The races are usually over a course of a few kilometres. People run with one dog: the runner wears a waist belt, and the dog is connected to the runner by a bungee line, which reduces shock both to the runner and the dog when the dog pulls. Canicross is not only a great way for the runner to keep fit but also great exercise for dogs.

To read the full article, head to Australian Dog Lover

IT'S COMPETITION TIME!

Don't miss your chance to be included in the 2018 NEGRC Queensland Calendar! We love our Sled Dog Racing, Canicross and Bikejoring in Queensland and we want to see you and your pooch loving it too! Sled dogs were their mode of transport over any distance. This mode of transport eventuated into a competitive sport which now occurs throughout most of the continents. Sled Dog Racing is where either one dog or a team pulls either a sled or a rig or scooter (for areas with no snow).

What is a Musher?

The musher is the person who controls the team and stands on the back of the sled or rig or on the scooter. The musher uses voice commands to control the team giving them instructions on which direction to turn, how fast to run, stop and start.

Where in Australia can I see Sled Dog Racing?

There are races in New South Wales, Victoria, Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. Races are normally held at State Forest trails.

When can I see Sled Dog Racing?

Unfortunately, Sled Dog Racing is not all year around this is due to the temperature restrictions in race rules and for the health benefit of the dogs. The racing season starts in May and finishes in September.

Do I need a husky or malamute to compete in Sled Dog Racing?

No. Any dog that shows the desire to pull and run can do Sled Dog Racing. Harness up your dog a couple of times and you might be surprised what it can do.

Can anyone become a Musher?

Anyone can become a musher no matter how old or young you are.

What equipment do I need?

Your dog needs to wear a specific harness which attaches to a gangline. The gangline is simply a piece of bungie rope which attaches the dog to the scooter, rig or canicross belt. A scooter is used for 1 or 2 dog teams and a rig is used for teams with 3 up to 8 dogs. Canicross is for 1 dog. You will also need a helmet, a safety kit which contains safety scissors. If the race is at night then you must also have a head lamp.

Who can I talk to to compete in Sled Dog Racing?

Join your local club to start competing in Sled Dog Racing. NEGRC Queensland is a Sled Dog Club with events in Toowoomba, Esk, Brisbane and Tenterfield NSW. After finding their preferred location and initiating the feeding, a tick will remain stationary for days, taking in the infinite abundance of nutrients. They anaesthetise the area they bite through in order to prevent any sensation of pain, so it’s all that harder to detect them. Ticks are usually active from Spring, Summer (at their worst) and then Autumn. In some places in Australia, they are active all year around.

How does my Arctic Breed get Ticks?

After a nice stroll at the park, especially in brushy and foresty areas, your dog may pick up a few ticks on the way. It’s important to check your dog for ticks periodically, especially in the warmer summer months. They are most often acquired from tall brush or grass where they board your unsuspecting dog as she’s enjoying playtime, but they can also be acquired from your very own backyard . More often than not, ticks will remain undetected because of their small size. But after a few days of feasting, a tick may grow exponentially larger as they fill with blood. Ticks prefer to feast near the head, neck, ear, and feet area, but they are not limited to those areas, so be sure to check everywhere!

How do I Know if my Arctic Breed has a Tick?

Some ticks may be small enough to miss, but generally, you can detect most of them with the naked eye. A good rule of thumb is to check your dog for ticks every time you go out for playtime in grassy or brushy areas, especially areas open to forests where deer and other animals can carry them in.

How do I Remove a Tick from my Arctic Breed?

Care has to be taken when removing a tick from your Arctic Breed. The most popular removal tool is the good old tweezers, but there are products specifically designed to remove ticks like the Tick Nipper. You want to grasp the tick as close to your dog’s skin as possible, without pinching it. The tick feels solid, but it can burst if you squish it with the tweezers, making it harder to remove. Any blood that comes out of the tick can contain an infection that could transmit to your dog or even to you! Gently pull the tick out. Be sure to remove all body parts including the head.

How do I Prevent a Tick Infestation?

First and foremost, keep your lawn mowed and clean. Tall grass and trash may invite rodents to visit your lawn and deposit ticks on your dog’s playground. There are many commercial products including Tick Collars (Preventic), Chews (Bravecto) or Spot On treatments (Frontline) available for tick and flea control to keep those parasites off your fur friend. You can purchase these in pet stores or online.

For more information check out the following links:

https://australianpestspecialists.com.au/2017/09/18/reduce-chances-ticks-property/

http://www.abc.net.au/news/health/2016-11-02/the-tick-debate:-how-should-you-pull-them-out/7541358

https://www.productreview.com.au/c/tick-flea-control.html

And We 'Dashed for Diggers'

2017's Pointscore 6 - Dash for Diggers was ran in honour of Young Veterans.
